Improve Your Posture While You Sleep
When we talk to our customers about how the right mattress can improve their posture, we often hear: 'Everybody slouches. It can’t do that much damage, right?'
Poor posture is so common it’s practically an epidemic, but from a health perspective, there’s nothing normal about it. Everybody knows that standing up straight makes them look taller and more confident, but few consider that the benefits of good posture reach far beyond their appearance.
For a better understanding of how deeply posture affects your well-being, it helps to take a broad look at the parts of the body affected by it. Good posture translates to proper alignment of the joints, muscles, ligaments, and vital organs. By extension, it affects breathing, digestion, elimination, and nervous system function. A rounded-shoulder, head-forward posture can cause nerve interference from spina misalignment, reduced lung capacity thanks to decreased space in your chest cavity, and inefficient bowel function due to sagging intestines.
That’s on top of better-known side effects like neck and back pain, headaches, jaw pain, and a reduced range of motion. A fascinating new body of research also shows that bad posture decreases energy levels and increases feelings of depression. So much for the theory that slouching is just a cosmetic issue!
If bad posture is so dangerous, why is it so common? If you’re reading this hunched over your computer, you already know the answer. Many of us sit at our computers for upwards of eight hours a day, and while doing so, lack the core strength to sit up straight. We commute in cars with poorly designed seats, work sedentary desk jobs, sleep on unsupportive mattresses, and largely fail to address our posture until persistent pain makes it a problem we can’t ignore.
On one hand, the idea that something as simple as bad posture can cause this many problems is a little grim. On the other, consider that addressing this issue will have a domino-effect of health benefits you’ll see and feel for the rest of your life. It’s never too late to start working on your alignment, but the earlier you act, the better. If you’re already suffering from some or all of the aforementioned symptoms, it’s a good idea to see a chiropractor or physiotherapist. These health professionals are trained to tackle posture problems, and can advise you on the right steps to take for your unique case. There’s more good news: some of the work can be done while you sleep. Sleeping on a properly fitted mattress is an integral part of maintaining good alignment throughout your life.
Depending on its quality and fit, a mattress can be a major factor in bad alignment or a key part of its correction. Your mattress should provide uniform support from head to toe, leaving no gaps between you and your and sleeping surface. It should be firm enough to keep your skeleton in the right position, but soft enough to contour your body. Over time, a supportive sleep surface will help address existing posture issues and prevent new ones from forming.
This idea is simple enough, but with largely meaningless buzz words like "orthopaedic" floating around the market, finding the right fit can be confusing. Never trust a mattress salesperson with a one-size-fits-all approach. Body type, sleeping style, and pre-existing health conditions are all important factors to take into account when you invest in a new mattress, and it’s a good idea to involve your health professional in the decision-making process.
