How To Get A Proper Sleep At A Hotel

Whether you're a seasoned jetsetter or a grounded homebody, getting a good night’s sleep in a hotel can be a challenge. There’s actually a solid biological reason behind this unfortunate truth—when you sleep in a new place, your brain stays half awake (to butcher the science a little). This is probably an evolutionary adaptation we’ve developed to help keep us safe in unfamiliar places… not that that's any comfort to a weary traveller battling jet lag!

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to get a better night’s sleep at a hotel, from planning your stay to unwinding when you arrive. The key is to trick your body into believing that you’re in a familiar, non-threatening environment.

First, if you’re a frequent traveller and it’s possible for you to do so, try to stick to a single hotel brand. Large hotel chains tend to have similar room layouts, use similar mattresses, and so on, all of which will make you feel more at home if you visit again and again. Of course, it can be exciting to try new hotels, but if sleep is your major concern, it really helps to have a little brand loyalty.

Next, try to replicate your home routine as much as you can. If you typically shower in the evening, do the same when you’re abroad. Always read a few chapters of a book before turning out the lights? There’s no reason to abandon this habit while travelling. Your bedtime routine signals to your body that it’s time to wind down for sleep—and the more consistent you are, the easier it will be to relax. (That holds true for getting a good night’s sleep at home too, by the way)!

Lastly, if at all possible, try to make your hotel room cozy and conducive to sleep. This means a cool ambient temperature, darkness, and quiet. If you’re lucky enough to stay in a private room, this shouldn’t be too difficult—but if you’re more of a hostel person, a good sleep mask and comfy pair of earplugs are your best bet.

When you get home from your trip, you may find yourself missing the plush feel of your hotel bed. If so, make sure to check out your local Regal Sleep Solutions’ Resort Range. This range of mattresses is specially designed to feel like a luxurious sleep at a top quality hotel!
