1) Use a silk pillowcase
Did you know that dermatologists can usually tell which side you sleep on based on your skin? Using a silk pillowcase will help reduce the friction between your face and your pillow, which helps prevent wrinkles over time. Bonus: Say goodbye to bedhead and split ends, since your hair will also benefit from smooth texture of silk.
2) Stop drinking alcohol within 2-3 hours of going to sleep
If you tend to wake up with a puffy face, your regular nightcap may be to blame. In addition to seriously affecting sleep quality, drinking alcohol before bed will likely cause your body to retain water, leaving you with a bloated face by morning. Trade the drink for a cup of tea or warm milk.
3) Always take off your makeup before bed
Ladies and fancy gents take note—that age-old beauty advice about washing your face before bed is 100% true. Built up dirt and oil from the day before can wreak havoc on your skin at night, especially if you’re prone to breakouts.
4) Use a concentrated overnight beauty serum
Since you don’t have to worry about sun sensitivity or makeup interactions at night, bedtime is perfect for breaking out your arsenal of concentrated skin creams. Use alpha-hydroxy acids or retinoids to exfoliate, and top up with a deep-hydrating cream or oil to replenish your skin’s natural moisture barrier. 5) Get the right amount of sleep
Banal advice it may be, but it’s also the most important point on this list. All the silk pillowcases and skin creams in the world will not make up for regularly under-sleeping (or sleeping too much). Seven to nine hours a night—every night—is your best bet for clear skin, shiny hair, and healthy aging.
